Apollo Parkways Primary School is excited to be taking big steps to become a more sustainable school. We have a very active Environmental Council (EC) of Grade 3-6 students who drive many sustainability initiatives, and the school is part of Resource Smart Schools, a Victorian Government program that aims to embed sustainability in everything at our school.

Some of our student-led sustainability initiatives include:

·       Nude Food Days

·       Walk to School Day in May each year

·       Collecting bottles and cans for the container deposit scheme to fundraise for environmental projects at school

·       Pollinator Garden, planted by Grade 4 students with support from Edendale Farm. This garden will attract pollinators to Indigenous plants

·       Students presenting at yearly Kids Teaching Kids Climate Change Conference at Edendale Farm

Whole school projects and initiatives include:

·       Working with CERES Environmental Park to complete the first module of the Resource Smart Schools program

·       Composting fruit and vegetable scraps onsite thanks to four composting cones that were purchased with a Landcare/Woolworths grant.

·       Weekly newsletter is published by email

·       Notices and communication through COMPASS

·       Paper, coffee pods, printer cartridges are collected from classrooms and offices for recycling

·       Replacing lights with efficient LED globes

·       Reducing waste at school events with reusable and biodegradable catering supplies

Bottles and cans recycling is now up and running at Apollo Parkways PS.

The Environmental Council has done lots of work to educate our school community on how to collect bottles and cans at school. Big thanks to the families who are taking the bottles and cans to our local milkbar for the 10c refund. Money from this is going back to the EC team to fund more environmental projects like nesting boxes, plants and worm farms. Check out the feel good stats from our first collection:
